Taking inspiration from the spring fashion collection of Nicole Miller and its use of metallic and color, interior designer Florence Perchuk used color with abandon in the Design House kitchen. “I wanted a design that would be out of the box, and make people aware that you can be different even in the kitchen. “So hot pink and chartreuse became the palette, and brushed steel became the metal accent.
The unifying design element is the perforated stainless steel over the green painted base of the island that matches the backsplash above the countertops. “I also loved Nicole’s fabrics and asked her to send me something striking to use for display.” Perchuk sandwiched the bold and graphic fabric between two sheets of tempered glass for the countertop on the central island, bringing all the colors in the kitchen together. “It’s heat-resistant so it’s actually a very practical material.”
Functionally the space serves two purposes: It’s a food preparation and an entertainment center with a wall-mounted television and a beverage service area. Echoing the use of brushed steel on the walls are the handsome appliances from the Electrolux ICON line. Recently introduced to American homeowners, they are available through Foremost Appliances in the Design Center.

flirting with formality
A ceramic farmhouse sink and vintage-style faucet suit the formal character of a 1890s home. A floral motif on the sink apron and unexpected colors make the room warm and inviting.

A counter-depth stainless-steel

molding gives the room stature.

Formerly unused rooms near
the kitchen were converted into
handy utility areas-one for laundry
and gift wrapping, the other
beverage center and bar. The
raspberry walls add a splash of color.
